One of the really fun things about writing all these drabbles is the number and variety of characters who suddenly found voices. This is another from a perspective not often heard from, and as I selected this, a plot bunny hopped out of the woodwork and looked up at me with these sad, soleful eyes. I immediately gave it a carrot, brushed the dust and ash out of its fur, and gave it a home in the hutch with the others. Who knows what I'll do with it one of these days...

Without further ado...

I awaken.

Something stirs in the empty places within the mountain above me, something I have not sensed for Ages of the world.

Not the small ones, who awake me with their hammers and their shovels and dump dirt and dust on my head - those I can blast into ashes with a single breath. Not the other small ones, who clammer and skitter and chatter and fight among themselves until I cannot stand the din - those I blast into ashes regularly, because they never seem to learn.

No. This is different. A challenge I dare not refuse.

Olórin.

Hmm I wonder if the small ones are the dwarfs and if the other small ones are orcs??? One wonders what/who he refers to.

And of course the challenge is the Balrog right??

I always loved Gandalf, and am so happy that you managed to get a plot bunny from him! :)

Hugs,
Vanime

The first "small ones" are indeed the dwarves. The second are the goblins.

Yes, the challenge is the Balrog.

I'm not certain that Gandalf was the one to summon the bunny, though. My Dark Muse™ (as opposed to [livejournal.com profile] pandemonium213's Dark Muse™) has eight legs, likes to walk across my ceiling and has a rather disturbing habit of dropping uncomfortable story ideas on me... :-D

I'm a big fan of all the Little Bits and this one is full of win. And I do adore your Dark Muse™ and my Dark Muse™ doffs his dark hat to her ability to tickle you with those eight legs.

I have a Beanie Baby spider -- Shelob -- who occupies an honored spot in the Halls of Pandaemonium. She just sits there and looks cute as opposed to inspiring me with boffo drabbles like the one above. :^)
