Aearwen's Little Bits - Foreboding

I have this habit of crawling into the heads of characters that others find... less than comfortable. I did this before in a different fandom altogether (and lemme tell ya, actually starting to understand the thoughts and motivations of a cannibalistic serial killer/rapist was not a comfortable thing to do!!!) I am currently working on a novel-length piece for the LotR fandom involving a character who is very rarely if ever portrayed in fanfic - and never in anything remotely resembling a favorable light.
All of this by way of introducing of the the drabbles that tackles one of Tolkien's "Bad Guys" ™:
It began as a nuisance shudder of foreboding, as if trying to draw his attention away from the easy victory his vastly superior forces were winning. It built into a wave of unceasing dread; so much about this final conflict had not gone according to plan. He was missing something - what was it?
A hoarse cry rang out from the wrong direction, defiant, challenging. What had been dread now became fear, directing protective Nazgul toward the heart of the mountain.
Then came the wave of searing, cleansing flame - and all that had been Sauron scattered to the winds.
And, for whatever it's worth, I'm drabbling again. I'm very pleased to announce that since my last posting date roughly a week ago, I have written a total of five drabbles. I'm not gonna force myself to drabble each and every day, like I did in an effort to win that dubious "Limpet" award at GoI; but it does feel good to be getting back into the habit.
I told you all I would.
This means, of course, that I'll just have that many more drabbles to post for you. Lucky you!

Is this the one I have been privileged to read on the LC? If so, fandom is in for one extraordinary story of a character who IMO deserves a full and complex treatment as that which you are applying so well.

Yup. AND, for what it's worth, I'm thrilled to announce that I've almost finished the next chapter of that piece, and should have it up for concrit/comment within the next few. My own, new "Dark Muse" has been sitting on my shoulder, whispering some of the most amazing/awful things into my ear.
And I agree; I have never seen that particular character done with any depth or understanding at all. And now, hopefully, with our exchange here we have created some intrigued readers who'll be waiting for it when it comes out. :-D

Oooh! Looking much forward to finding out whose head you've entered now.

Date: 2009-09-12 08:15 pm (UTC)What's surprising is that I'm going back to bouncing from one character to another with these new drabbles - even to writing from the POV of "otherwise inanimate objects" (and by that, I mean more than just from the POV of the One Ring.)
Looking much forward to finding out whose head you've entered now.
I can promise you it isn't the most comfortable head to spend a lot of time in... But the story is compelling, and really only given a bare outline form in the Silmarillion. I feel like I've been given tickets back-stage to one of the great events of the legendarium's history.
