I think my plan of writing 2k word/day 6 days/week is gonna work out really well for me. I'm pleased with the progress I made today, and combined with yesterday, puts me ahead of where I thought I'd be.

This is today's meter:

5327 / 50000 words. 11% done!

Considering that I essentially tossed away approximately 71k words worth of a first draft that doesn't look anything (very much) like what my outline does now, I'm feeling really positive about this story. For one thing, the first draft was in an extremely close single character POV, where I'll be moving from one POV to the next from scene to scene this time around. For another, some of the action that took place in the first draft will actually have backstory (in my mind, even if not on the page) and reasons behind it.

I've grown as a writer since I first started to put this story down. I'm not satisfied with characters I don't know well before I start, and I certainly have no time or patience with cardboard cut-out, two-dimensional placeholder characters – especially when they are my main character! My first novel, started over 30 years ago (OMG!!!) suffered from that problem. If ever there was another story to ditch and start over from scratch, that would be the one!

No, actually, once I get at least a healthy chunk of Phoenix pounded out, I'll have to do something like this again for Idago, which is the other novel for which I've done extensive world-building and character construction. AAMOF, I may just give myself another year's worth of world/character-building in Maple, and perhaps an outline of the plot from start to finish, and set myself up with that one for next year's NaNo.

We'll see.

Either way, so far this NaNo season, I seem to be on track.

And now that I've met my days' goal word count, I can knuckle down and get the "homework" done for my Players group before practice tomorrow - and then possibly sit down and have some fun in LOTRO with my son JJ later this afternoon. Other chores are sitting on my "Round TUIT" list too. We'll just have to see how ambitious I feel.
