This week's drabble takes up back a ways in Gondorian history. I have to admit to some fascination with the event described here – but any plot bunny with Eärnur's name on it will just have to wait for a while, I swear. Until I can entertain it properly, this will have to do:
"What word?"
The servant kneeling before him trembled. "King Eärnur did ride forth to put an end to the evil of Angband once and for all."
"Did he have his guard around him?"
The servant shook his head. "The challenge was to single combat, my lord. He made them stay back."
This was dire news indeed. "What did you see?"
"An ill wind arose that whipped the very dust from the ground and hid the King. When it cleared, there was no sign of him."
"My lord Steward, what do we do now?"
Mardil gazed around him, stunned. What indeed!
