Last but not least, I bring you the double-drabble that was the seed for what has turned into an epic - or at least I think it will end up being an epic. The larger work is called "I Dhaerlend Dadui", which means "The Second Great Journey" in Sindarin. I think those of you who have been watching IDD slowly come to life in the Lizard Council will understand how this double-drabble was merely feeding a voracious, rabid and intractible plot bunny who has yet to let go of my ankle.

And so, for [livejournal.com profile] pandemonium213, because I promised her she could see this today:

Celeborn looked around the circle of faces ringing the campfire. "We should have stayed."

Elrond shook his head. "I could not."

"Perhaps not you, but we should have," Elladan stated, nodding agreement with his grandfather.

"We only exist here. In Ennor, we lived." Elrohir added solemnly

"I cannot believe I say this, but perhaps Fëanor had it right. Things are too perfect here. The only thing that raises people's ire is politics." Glorfindel grumbled. "And I have had enough of that to last until the breaking of the world."

Elrond sighed. "Even I feel this. As coarse as were the edain, their lives moved forward. Back then, I saw that as a curse, but now I can see that it was a way to keep the days fresh. In Aman, we live too much in the past."

"Idleness wearies me greatly," Legolas spoke finally. "Were it not that the way is shut, I would again be building a ship."

"But the way is shut," Erestor observed. "So what do we do now?"

"There are new and unexplored lands to the west," Gildor suggested.

"Will the Valar let us go?" Haldir asked.

"They had better," Thranduil stated flatly. "They had better."

And thus it began...

Oooh, thanks so much for posting that! To me, this seed crystal that gave rise to IDD rings so true. Wouldn't the immigrants from M-e get bored with perfection?

I love Thran's last line!

Heh -- nice! You caught Thranduil perfectly.

You know I just wondered - what do the wives (and sweethearts) think about all this? Do they feel the same?? Wouldn't it be something if they did?

Hugs,

The story I Dhaerlend Dadui (IDD mentioned above) - which is turning into quite the epic - answers that question, as well as almost any other you might have. It's coming slowly, but most who've read it like it.

I heard his voice in my head as clear as day - and he was not amused, believe me!

It's coming. Slowly, but it currently sits at 48k words.

Absolutely - and the societal inertia would drive them buggy. They're used to doing something that, in however big or small a manner, serves a greater good. I cannot see Valinor having that aim as much of a goal.

Those who have been there the longest and/or never left it after coming wouldn't remember anything else. But those who stayed in Ennor until the very bitter last? I don't see them enjoying the perfection for a whole lot longer than it takes them to "heal" from whatever psychic/emotional wounds they brought with them.

And all of them are more than capable of deciding to find something more fitting to their idea of "good."
