Spring Cleaning Time...
Apr. 17th, 2010 05:17 pmWell, I'm now invested in Spring Cleaning.
No, I still don't have the antique secretary's desk in my house yet - which is probably just as well. I did, however, tear the bread rack apart and get rid of two large bags full of trash and stuff that just wasn't worth keeping. A lot of it remains piled on the dining table, awaiting boxes and shifting it to the storage room.
My quandry is that I've tripped over a former hobby - collecting trading cards - and now I've no idea what to do with the collections. I have several permutations of Star Trek cards, Babylon 5 cards, SeaQuest DSV cards – as well as some loose cards. Most of them are in excellent to mint condition. However, I have NO idea where to take them or how much any of them might be worth. Note to self: Next time I decide to hang onto memorabilia, DON'T!! It gets dusty, shoved into dark, out-of-the-way places and just essentially becomes clutter.
I also started tearing into my kitchen office, with the knowledge that I will be moving part of my "operation" into a bedroom sometime after May 5th. It hurt like hell (mostly because I was reaching up with arms that simply don't make those kinds of motions anymore) but I got the bookshelves over my computer mostly cleared off, the junk I didn't want to keep stuffed into bags and hauled out, and the books I wanted put back into place. I finally have a whole shelf dedicated to Tolkien (big surprise) - and a completely empty shelf right above it. Not exactly certain which kinds of books I'm gonna put there - whatever they are, they'll probably be the kind that I don't look at TOO often, because it hurts to reach for them.
JJ finally broke down and cleaned (at) his bedroom. *sounds of revelry fill the air* I've been after him for - what? - three years to make that room at least passable. Finally found the proper "carrot" that moved him off of dead stop: he wants an X-Box 360 (used), and managed to get Lathron (older twin) to help him dung out the crud from under his bed because he's afraid of spiders. So, criteria for Mom considering writing the check has been met. I guess I go to GameCrazy tomorrow and look at used equipment. The rest of his money is being squirrelled away against a trip to Disneyland in December with a disabled group. He'll have to save hard and heavy for that one.
Daughter Súl's apartment continues to progress. The kitchen is *e*m*p*t*y*, cupboard doors are all taken off, and the hinges removed from the door panels. Fridge and stove currently occupy space in the living room. We talked last nite, and I think I've got her convinced to have the new flooring in kitchen and bath done on one day, and then when it's okay to be moving stuff onto it, move all the rest of the stuff that will fit into the kitchen so she can get the carpeting in the bedroom and living room replaced in another one-day convulsion. She WAS thinking of having ALL of it done on one day; sure am glad she's starting to use her head for something besides holding her ears apart!
She really didn't have the vaguest idea what all she was getting into when she started that project. Worse, most of those who had "promised" to help her bailed out on her - for good reasons, of course, but still - and she's done the bulk of the work all on her own. What she's done looks GOOD too. When she's done, maybe in a month or so, she'll be able to look at the place with a lot of pride. But it's still a wreck at the moment.
Such is life around here...
