Nope. No NaNo writing progress yesterday, despite the best of intentions. I'm hoping today... Let's face it, I probably won't "win" this year either - but I'll keep chipping away at it. I really wanted to get a good start on the first part of this novel, and NaNo is a good reason to do so.

Errands to do this morning, but I'm hoping to spend the bulk of my time this afternoon writing. The way this is going, I'd need to score at least 3500 words each time I sit down, as Wenesday, Thursday and Saturday seem to be the only days I can really get the peace & quiet I need to concentrate. I'll try, but I've decided I'm not gonna stress over it. If I make it, I make it; if I don't, I don't.

And, just for the record, I hate the LJ interface nowadays. Things that I used to be able to nest simply don't nest anymore, such as the fact that I wanted to put a lj username in the cut textbox. But will LJ allow that anymore? *N*O*.

*sigh*

Post the names of all the files in your WIP folder, regardless of how non-descriptive or ridiculous. Ask about one and I'll tell you something about it, or post a snippet.

"In The Elvenking's Forest" belongs to the "In the Dark" head!canon, which includes "Return" and "Sacrifices" as well, and also will include "Inheritance" on my WIPs list. This piece takes place a good many centuries later.

A snippet for you:

As the flames finally climbed to obscure the remains, Thranduil stood with his arms crossed over his chest, block clutched in a tight grasp, glowering. Long ago, he had given his word to protect the family that had settled here – given them a way to call upon his help when it was needed – only to have the family annihilated by men before having a chance to call for aid, if they even remembered how. His head rose, and his eyes scanned the southern horizon, narrowing at even more thin plumes of smoke. Too many funeral pyres had he seen in the past few days; too many innocent lives lost, and for what? The vain aspirations to power by those who neither deserved it nor wielded it properly? Would the world ever be thus?

"Sire?"

It took three repetitions of the warrior's call to finally break through the trance. Thranduil shook himself as if he'd walked out of a cold rain. "Yes?" he answered finally.

"The trees directly west of here are most upset, but do not speak clearly. Tarion calls for you in hopes that you can understand them better."

Sighing, Thranduil followed the warrior across the farmstead and in the direction of a stand of old oaks. The distress of the trees was soon obvious; and the moment he was close enough, he put out a hand to touch the nearest trunk. "Peace, my friends. The flames we have lit this day will not approach you. You know that we would not threaten your safety." He frowned when the distress continued unabated. "What troubles you then?" he asked in confusion.

An ancient oak, battling the sleep that the late autumn had already brought to so many of its kin, spoke the loudest, guiding the King to it. "Tarion! Bring a blanket - quickly!" Thranduil very carefully touched the face of the mortal child cradled in the crotch of the tree to see if she still lived. Her skin was cold and her lips had a slight bluish tinge to them, but fingers that probed at the neck found where the little heart continued to beat, although weakly. She didn't rouse at all at the gentle touch.

Changeling is the sequel to "Light Fingers" and "Elladaniel". A snippet for you:

"Just think of all the new music you would hear at Estel's court. You could learn it all and bring it back with you when you come home. You know how we love new music here."

Even the thought of hearing and playing music she hadn't heard her whole life wasn't enough to lift her spirits. "I don't want to go," she grumbled and kicked at a small weed at her feet. "Imladris is my home."

Elrohir was silent for a moment that seemed to stretch. Finally he asked, "Do you remember keeping watch over that nest of bluejays last spring?"

Ivoreth looked up into a face that looked all too much like her Ada's. And yet, the expressions that danced over those features were definitely not her father's. She would never mistake the one twin for the other. Elrohir had been a stalwart and loving support to her for years. He never would mention something so seemingly unrelated without good reason. "I remember - why?"

"So you remember watching the chicks slowly grow up, until they finally were almost too big to fit into the nest?"

"Yes…" She had an idea where this was going now. "But…"

Elrohir ignored her attempt to interrupt, just as her Ada had. "The time came, did it not, that the parents had to force the chicks to abandon the nest, to try their own wings?" He looked down at her sideways. "Do you think the chicks were happy to be so treated?"

"No…" The worst thing was that she understood what Elrohir was trying to say, and how it merely reinforced what her Ada had stated needed to happen. "I'm not a bluejay chick," she muttered.

"No, you are not. You are a stubborn daughter of Elladan, wanting to keep your world in the comfortable and safe patterns that you have enjoyed for the last few years of your life. But Imladris is too small for you now, my little bird, and your wings have grown and are strong. The time has come for you to try your luck with the winds of fate, and do so in the lands of your own people."

You would choose the big one... :-D

"I Dhaerlend Dadui" is the pivot piece that belongs to the same head!canon as "Along Came A Spider", "Foundlings", "In the House of Elrond", "Light Fingers" and many other one-shots.

"I Dhaerlend Dadui" means, in Sindarin, "The Second Great Journey". In essence, most of those Elves who remained behind in Arda Marred are suffering from mild to moderate forms of discrimination - and are sick and tired of it.

So this, which is huge now at nearly 200k words today, is the tale of those who leave to make a new home in Avathar, as well as those they leave behind.

A snippet for you:

Celeborn blinked. He had come down the gangplank fully expecting a pitched verbal battle, only to discover that his visitor was the wife whom he had wooed despite the wishes otherwise of both her people and his. Her fire was banked, not expired, he could see; perhaps he was wrong to have thought that there was little left of the one he loved to even consider returning. "If the day comes that Avathar holds a secure settlement, will you consider coming to visit?"

There it was: that little spark of anger that told him that while her words had not been cutting or cruel, she was still mightily discontented in his decision to go. "Just because I understand you does not mean that I do not continue to believe this venture to be an exercise in futility and foolishness. Avathar has long since been abandoned by Belain and Edhil alike; no doubt there is good reason for this."

"And just as I am not willing to subject myself to court life, you are not willing to venture away from it again." It wasn't a question.

She stared at him for a long moment before dipping her head in a proud nod. "You are correct."

Then things had not changed all that much after all. "Then this is navaër."

"It is."
